This front page has the main articles headline not touching the article. According to the Harrower, the headline for news stories is suppose to touch the article and be below the cutline for the photo. The Harrower stresses the correct order for the photo, headline, cutline, and text because the wrong order may confuse the readers. The page does, however, have a dominant photo to draw the readers attention rather than a lot of smaller photos. According the the Harrower, “They’re attracted by the photo;they read down, through the cutline, into the headline; then, if they’re still interested, they read the text.” It also keeps the reader from being bored of the page.

This page starts off with an unusual headline which I believe is suppose to describe the photo. The photo headline is unnecessary. The article also does not need two photos for the story because the second photo that is adjacent to the article is unnecessary and does not add anything to the article. Before adding a second photo, the Harrower suggests asking oneself, “Are they that different from each other? Does the story require this extra visual information?” The second photo does not add anything to the story in my opinion. The page shows a creative way in displaying the photo adjacent to the article as to not make it touch the above photo. However, the Harrower recommends that the photo “Position the photo on the proper side – whichever side forces the action in the photo to move toward the text,”. This is not the case in this page.

Key Club has a divisional concert for our Key Club division which includes Gabe Bondoc, Supreme Soul, Summer Breeze, The Lost Kids, and more. It is for raising money for pediatric trauma prevention, Haiti relief, and the Oakland children hospital. In Interact, they are fundraising for the next three weeks, selling snacks for the International Project and End Polio Now. They are having officer elections also.

Blog Post #7: Leads

“Albert Halluin and Judy Perchonock were 70 and 60 years old, respectively, but their relationship was young. They planned to be married in May — three years after they started dating — and spent every weekend at Halluin’s mountain home west of Yosemite National Park. But the Bay Area couple’s weekly routine turned tragic Friday night, when Halluin’s single- engine plane plummeted into the backyard of a home near Pine Mountain Lake Airport in Groveland (Tuolumne County).”

This lead explains the two main people in the article, Albert Halluin and Judy Perchonock. It also gives us a person perspective into their lives. The article also tells us what has happened, when their plane ran into the backyward of a home. It explains where it happened, near the Pine Mountain Lake Airport in Groveland. It does not tell us when it happened in the lead. It does not tell us the cause of the plane crash, but that it is under investigation. I don’t think that there is a why question to the story, but it is also left unanswered.

“Warriors guard Monta Ellis found himself in an unusual position early in Sunday’s fourth quarter, and then right where he is most comfortable in the final minutes.

After sitting the first 7:53 of the fourth quarter and watching his teammates erase an 18-point deficit, Ellis came off the bench and was right in the middle of every key play in a 108-104 victory over Atlanta.”

This is an indirect lead into the story. It provides the reader with a snapshot of the game, and also provides an anecdotal side-story of one of the players in the game.

Key club is having a pancake breakfast for at Ihops. There will be unlimited Ihop pancakes and skits from AHS, WHS, MSHS, and IHS Key Clubs. Tickets will be $5 and there will be a raffle. There was also a recent election of new officers. Interact had an event in which students could get double hours for assisting the elderly.

Mid-Year Report

Going into the class, I had already had a notion of what I was to expect from the class because two of my friends had already taken the class last year. I did not hink however, that it would be so time consuming. I believe that part of the class was what made the class so difficult to handle because of all of the other classes that I have and that I need to focus on. There are a lot of things that have to be done outside of the classroom, like interviewing and observing. I also had to get used to the style of writing that journalism requires. I have been writing in honors classes for a long time, but I still had to get used to this style. It is very different than what I was used to. That was also a hard adjustment for me to handle. Overall, hoever, I was very pleased with the class because I get to experience something else from the normal academic and book focused classes that I usually take. This class is a lot more hands-on than those classes and i really enjoy that approach. It makes it a lot more interesting and less tedious.

Population Infographic

This infographic is really sweet. The proportional circles give the information a very unique graphic display that I have not seen before. It goes away from the usual bar graph that is most prevalent in these kinds of informational display. It even has a timeline on the top which gives it an extra flare. I believe that these kinds of displays can be used for an analysis of preferences in our school’s population, but it can also be used for a lot of other things.

Key club is having an election for next years officers. It is also having a breakfast for the Kiwanis Club of Fremont somewhere in February. During the breakfast, the club will be cooking and performing skits. It is $5 a ticket and the money will go to Kiwanis and Key club for the treasury and charity.

Key Club had a recent event called Fall Rally North at Great America r to Raise money towards the Pediatric Trauma Convention. They raised an estimated $60,000 towards that cause. They rented out their own buildings for the event. In December, Key Club will be doing its annual door-to-door choir singing, lighting up neighborhoods around Fremont to raise money. The National Key club will also be having a convention in April, the largest one of the year.

Interact has an upcoming event at Stanfrod selling concessions to raise money towards the End Polio Now program.
